Comprehensive Personality Disorder Treatment in California

Are you looking for personality disorder treatment in California from a program that understands how deeply these conditions are woven into the way you experience yourself, others, and the world around you? Personality disorders are often dismissed or misdiagnosed, while the people living with them contend with identity disturbance, intense relational difficulties, chronic emotional pain, impulsivity, and pervasive patterns of thoughts and behaviors that have shaped their lives for years. Finding treatment that approaches personality disorders without stigma and with clinical sophistication is invaluable. We understand the fears that can stand in the way:

  • What if I’ve been written off by providers before and this is more of the same?

  • What if the program pathologizes who I am rather than helping me understand myself?

  • Will the treatment address the relational dimensions of my experience as well as my individual symptoms?

  • What if the cost of long-term personality disorder treatment is unsustainable?

These concerns stem from real experience and are worth acknowledging directly. You deserve personality disorder treatment that approaches you with clinical rigor, genuine respect, and an understanding that recovery is possible regardless of what you may have been told before.

At Connections Mental Health, personality disorder treatment in California is grounded in evidence-based modalities proven effective for treating these conditions, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), schema therapy, and mentalization-based treatment (MBT). Our clinicians build individualized care plans that address the relational, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of personality disorders within a therapeutic relationship defined by consistency, transparency, and respect.

Since 2009, he has made a significant impact in the field, working tirelessly to support individuals grappling with addiction and mental health issues in a variety of settings, including residential treatment centers and outpatient facilities. Meet Our Clinicians

Joana Constante Freitas

Therapist - ACSW, MSW, EMDR Certified
My passion for becoming a therapist was shaped by my own experiences navigating cultural challenges, trauma, and substance-related struggles within my community. These experiences deepened my understanding of how important it is to feel seen, supported, and understood during life’s difficult moments. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine and a Master’s in Social Work from California Baptist University. I practice with both cultural and spiritual competence, and I have experience working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and spiritual traditions. My therapeutic style is direct, honest, and compassionate. I don’t believe you need to have everything figured out to begin therapy. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused work to support healing and growth. I strive to create a safe, supportive space where you can show up as you are, without judgment or pressure to perform. Whether you are working through trauma, grief, identity challenges, or substance use, my goal is to support you in building insight, resilience, practical coping tools, and a stronger connection with yourself. Outside of therapy, I enjoy spending time in nature, practicing my spirituality, playing music, and staying active through sports. I value real, meaningful connections, and I bring that same authenticity into my work with clients.

Huy Nguyen

Therapist - ASCW
My name is Huy Nguyen, and I am an Associate Clinical Social Worker. My therapeutic approach is grounded in empathy, collaboration, compassion, and individualized care. I use a warm and direct approach, creating a space where clients can feel supported while also being gently challenged when it can help them grow. I believe that clients are the experts of their own experiences, and my role is to work alongside them to identify the tools and strategies that can help them navigate life more effectively. I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Brainspotting. I tailor these approaches to each client’s unique experiences, needs, and goals rather than believing that one approach works for everyone. My decision to become a therapist was deeply influenced by my own personal experiences with therapy and witnessing how transformative that process can be. Those experiences shaped my belief that therapy can provide not only a place to heal, but also a space to better understand ourselves, develop new ways of coping, and build a life that feels more meaningful. My hope is not to help clients avoid the waves that life inevitably brings, but to help them find calmer seas while developing the skills and confidence to navigate the big waves when they come. Healing may look different for everyone, and I want to help each client discover what healing means for them and find their own way forward.

Ryan Ruiz

Therapist - AMFT
Ryan Ruiz is a dedicated and compassionate therapist at Connections Mental Health, bringing over seven years of experience and more than 3,000 hours of clinical work in substance use and mental health treatment. With a strong foundation in addiction recovery, trauma, and co-occurring disorders, Ryan has provided individual and group therapy across reputable treatment centers, developing personalized treatment plans that foster long-term healing and growth. His expertise spans mindfulness, trauma recovery, and psychodrama, and he has been an active member of interdisciplinary teams focused on clients’ mental, emotional, and physical wellness. As a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, Ryan is deeply committed to expanding his clinical knowledge and staying at the forefront of evidence-based approaches in addiction and mental health care. His therapeutic style blends empathy, structure, and innovation, helping clients navigate challenges with clarity and confidence. Ryan’s holistic approach emphasizes treating the whole person—addressing both the addiction and the underlying issues that contribute to distress and dysfunction. Beyond his clinical role, Ryan is passionate about mindfulness, personal growth, and mental health advocacy. His dedication to helping others extends into the broader community, where he supports initiatives that promote awareness and recovery. With his extensive experience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to client well-being, Ryan Ruiz is a valued member of the Connections Mental Health team, guiding individuals toward lasting change and self-discovery.
Meet Our Therapists

Residential Care in California for Personality Disorders

Personality disorders often show up in the patterns we repeat—how we respond to stress, how we relate to others, and how we experience our emotions. You might notice reactions that feel intense, fast, or difficult to control, even when part of you wants to handle things differently. Over time, those patterns can begin to affect relationships, decision-making, and your sense of stability.

If your reactions feel overwhelming or confusing at times, you’re not alone.

Inpatient personality disorder treatment creates space to slow those patterns down. In a structured setting, you can begin to understand your responses and practice new ways of thinking, reacting, and connecting.

  • Within of California there are residential programs available, offering structured environments for focused mental health care.

  • Of these, no fewer than 34 programs within 80 of California accept private insurance, helping reduce barriers to mental health treatment.

With consistent support and a clear routine, it becomes easier to build awareness and create more stable ways of responding over time.

If you’re considering personality disorder treatment in California, Connections can help you explore options that meet you where you are and support meaningful progress.

California Personality Disorder Treatment: FAQs

What is personality disorder treatment in California?

Personality disorder treatment is a structured, evidence-based level of care designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationship patterns, and build healthier coping skills in a safe and supportive setting. Treatment focuses on emotional regulation, self-awareness, and long-term stability through therapy, routine, and clinical support.

What’s the difference between residential inpatient and outpatient programs?

In a residential inpatient program, clients receive continuous therapeutic support, clinical care, and skill-building services in a stable setting focused on long-term recovery. Outpatient treatment offers greater flexibility, enabling individuals with personality disorders to attend scheduled therapy sessions while remaining engaged in work, school, and family life.

Does insurance cover personality disorder treatment in California?

Most major insurance plans provide coverage for personality disorder treatment. Our team can verify your benefits and help you understand exactly what services are included in your coverage.

What should I bring with me for personality disorder treatment in California?

Bring comfortable clothing, personal toiletries, and any approved medications. Many clients also choose to bring items such as a journal, book, or personal comfort items that help support reflection and emotional grounding during treatment.

What is daily life like in personality disorder treatment in California?

Each day includes scheduled individual and group therapy sessions, therapeutic activities, wellness routines, and time for rest in a calm, structured environment designed to support healing and emotional stability.

How long does personality disorder treatment last?

The length of treatment varies based on your individual needs, symptom severity, and recovery goals. Your care team will create a personalized treatment plan and adjust it as progress continues.

What types of therapy are used each day?

Daily care often includes evidence-based therapies such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed support, and coping-skills development to help improve emotional regulation and relationship functioning.

What happens after treatment is complete in California?

After completing treatment, many clients continue with outpatient therapy, step-down support, and aftercare planning to help maintain progress and support long-term emotional wellness.

What if I feel nervous about starting treatment?

That is completely okay. Many people begin treatment feeling uncertain, and our team works at your pace to help you feel safe, supported, and comfortable from the very beginning.

What’s the difference between residential inpatient and outpatient programs?

Residential inpatient programs offer the highest level of care, with clients receiving 24/7 treatment at a facility. Outpatient programs are a great option for people needing a lower level of care who can leave the treatment center and go home at the end of their daily sessions.
